Sean Ono Lennon Welcomes Baby Boy, the First Grandchild of John Lennon and Yoko Ono

Sean Ono Lennon has entered a new chapter of his life, becoming a father for the first time.

The musician, son of legendary Beatles star John Lennon and artist Yoko Ono, announced on September 1 that he and his longtime partner, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, have welcomed a baby boy named Aurelius. The arrival makes the newborn the first grandchild of John Lennon and the first grandchild of Yoko Ono.

Sean Lennon Introduces Baby Aurelius

Sharing the news on social media, Sean, 50, posted a photograph of himself and Kemp Muhl with their newborn son.

“Charlotte and I would like to announce that we have indeed created a Human Bean! His name is Aurelius! Thank you!” Sean wrote alongside the family photograph.

He later shared another image of himself holding Aurelius, as well as a photograph of Kemp Muhl in hospital with their son, captioning the latter simply: “Baby Momma!”

Kemp Muhl, 39, also documented the first days of motherhood, sharing several photographs of herself with the baby. In her typically unconventional style, she joked about the realities of becoming a new parent, including the lack of sleep and the challenges of caring for a newborn.

A New Generation of the Lennon Family

Aurelius’ arrival carries particular significance because of his connection to one of the most influential families in music history.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono welcomed Sean in 1975. Lennon was tragically killed in New York in December 1980, when Sean was just five years old. Aurelius is therefore the first child of Sean and the first grandchild of John Lennon.

Yoko Ono, now 93, is able to welcome her grandson, while John Lennon never had the opportunity to meet him.

Sean’s older half-brother, Julian Lennon, is also part of the family’s musical legacy, but neither of John’s sons had previously become fathers. The birth of Aurelius therefore marks a significant new generation for the Lennon family.

Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl’s Musical Connection

Sean and Charlotte Kemp Muhl have been together since 2007, after first meeting at Coachella in 2005. Their relationship has also been closely connected to music.

The pair have collaborated through their psychedelic folk project The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, while Sean has built his own career as a musician, producer and songwriter. He has released solo music and worked with artists including his mother, Yoko Ono, as well as contributing to projects beyond the Lennon family name.

Interestingly, Aurelius’ musical education may have already begun. Kemp Muhl revealed that she has been playing Aphex Twin and Igor Stravinsky for the newborn, suggesting that the next generation of the family is already being introduced to a distinctly eclectic musical world.

Carrying John Lennon’s Legacy Forward

The arrival of Aurelius comes at an especially meaningful time for Sean, who has spoken publicly about his responsibility to preserve his father’s cultural legacy.

Sean has previously described his role as helping ensure that younger generations continue to remember John Lennon, Yoko Ono and The Beatles. Now, with the birth of his own son, that legacy has gained an intensely personal new dimension.

For Beatles fans around the world, Aurelius’ arrival represents more than a celebrity birth. He is the newest member of one of music’s most recognisable families — and John Lennon’s first grandchild.
