The BBC has confirmed that Waterloo Road will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in January 2027, with its 18th series on the way and another run of the long-running school drama commissioned.

The announcement offers welcome news for fans of the British television favourite, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in March 2026. Since first arriving on screens in 2006, Waterloo Road has built a loyal audience through its portrayal of school life, family relationships and the challenges facing young people and teachers.

The upcoming series will continue that tradition, combining socially relevant storylines with the humour, friendships and personal relationships that have become central to the programme.

Chelsee Healey Returns as Janeece Bryant

One of the biggest highlights of the new series will be the return of Chelsee Healey as Janeece Bryant, a familiar character from the show’s original run.

This time, Janeece will be joined by newcomer Lauren Hylton, who plays her on-screen daughter, Cheryl Bryant. Cheryl arrives at Waterloo Road as a new student, bringing another generation of the Bryant family into the school’s storylines.

The student cast will also welcome several new faces, including Leo Ashton as Liam Shaw, Callum Broome as Nathan Clark, Yousef Naseer as Ibrahim Azzi, Lewis Pemberton as Cane Morris and Keelan Wright as Marshall Clark.

There will also be new additions to the teaching staff. Tashinga Bepete joins as Edward Connell, Cora Kirk plays Leah Merchant, and Mollie Winnard takes on the role of Gemma Tully. The characters are newly qualified teachers preparing to navigate the unpredictable environment of Waterloo Road.

The combination of returning characters and new arrivals is expected to give the next series a fresh dynamic while maintaining the connections that long-standing viewers recognise.

What Can Viewers Expect from Series 18?

According to the BBC, the new episodes will continue to explore real-life issues affecting teenagers, families and school staff.

The drama will balance challenging subjects and bold storylines with comedy, friendship and romance, maintaining the distinctive tone that has helped Waterloo Road remain relevant across different generations of viewers.

The programme has regularly used its school setting to explore wider social issues, bringing subjects that affect young people into mainstream television storytelling. Its approach allows personal experiences, family pressures and the realities of education to sit alongside the more traditional elements of a school drama.

An exact premiere date in January has not yet been announced, but the broadcaster has confirmed that the series will be available on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

BBC Orders More Waterloo Road

The announcement also confirms that the show’s future extends beyond its upcoming return. The BBC has commissioned another series, with filming taking place in Greater Manchester this autumn.

Cameron Roach, founder of Rope Ladder Fiction and executive producer of Waterloo Road, described the latest commission as an important achievement for the production, creative team and cast.

He also highlighted the show’s work with Screen Manchester, which has helped establish opportunities for training and development within the television industry.

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, welcomed the announcement, explaining that the new series will give audiences another opportunity to follow characters they have come to know and love.

The continued investment in the production also reflects the BBC’s commitment to supporting creative talent outside London. Filmed and produced in Greater Manchester, Waterloo Road forms part of the broadcaster’s Made of Manchester campaign, which celebrates the region’s contribution to British television.

Twenty Years of Waterloo Road

First broadcast in 2006, Waterloo Road has become one of the BBC’s recognisable school-based dramas. Its original run introduced audiences to a changing cast of pupils and teachers, while exploring the pressures and relationships that shape school communities.

The programme returned in 2023 following a revival, bringing a new generation of characters into the familiar setting. The return of Chelsee Healey as Janeece Bryant for the upcoming series also reconnects the revived drama with its earlier history.

With Series 18 scheduled for January 2027 and further episodes already in development, Waterloo Road shows no signs of leaving the BBC schedule.

For viewers who have followed the school since its beginnings, the announcement means more stories, familiar faces and new characters to discover. For a drama that has now spanned two decades, its continued renewal is a significant milestone in its place within British television.
