Following on from last year’s album, Green Decay, New Jersey synth artist Wavewulf returns with a new long-player, a release which give plenty of electronic bang for your buck. Over the course of 16 tracks (not 30 second affairs either), Wavewulf flexes his Moog muscles, with some nods towards electronic music pioneers as well as building upon his own inestimable output. We’re in outer space this time around, just the backdrop for Wavewulf’s bank of analogue and vintage machines.

It’s the array of synths at Wavewulf’s disposal that really adds the secret ingredient to his work. There’s a hugely endearing creakiness and age to the sounds he creates, the lead track alone, Space Capsule, having an air of some of the tranquil moments of War of the Worlds about it. It’s homely whilst still strangely robotic, an alluring mixture which extends across the rest of the album. Waverunner Symphony has an air of a garrison of robots marching onwards – there are obvious nods to Kraftwerk but also less obvious names like Klaus Schulze whose 70s works echo strongly here.

There’s great variety here too – the heavier, ominous Souls Rush feels like it’s escaped from an 80s horror movie; the more downbeat, reflective Ghosts of the Past and the almost ambient Floating Above the Sky. Less successful are the tracks featuring vocals, a little too jarring against an album which implores you to use your own imagination to build worlds. Nevertheless, this is a terrific album which really showcases the synthesizer as an instrument with endless possibilities and a artist who has the imagination to match.
