Elani are a three-piece afropop group hailing from Bamako, Mali. Having found success with their album Barua ya Dunia, the band have returned with the long awaited loves song ‘Kookoo’.
The group is made up of Wambui Ngugi, Brian Chweya and Maureen Kunga who came together at a young age when they were competing against each other in a music festival in Mali. Their shared love of music drew them to each other and so far, they have not looked back. There was one particular thing that they all had in common: all three of them are atheists, despite living in a highly religious country.
‘Kookoo’ is a real foot-tapper of a track, employing classic elements of pop alongside African beats and heritage that shine through, giving Elani an unheard of edge to their music.
The band are no strangers to the music industry having featured on the Pakistani music television series Coke studio, and they have also collaborated with the likes of Jose Chameleone and Sauti Sol.
