Olivia Rodrigo has officially released her new song “serena joy” worldwide, giving fans another glimpse into the creative period surrounding her latest album. The track is now available across streaming platforms after first appearing as an extremely limited physical release in California. 

The surprise release arrives just days before Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival in Irvine, California, adding an important new chapter to the singer’s 2026 era.

A Song Inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale

“serena joy” takes its name from Serena Joy Waterford, a character from Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale.

Rather than focusing on romantic relationships — a major theme of Rodrigo’s latest album — the song explores ideas surrounding social responsibility, ignorance and complicity. Its darker subject matter gives the track a noticeably different perspective from much of the singer’s recent work. 

Musically, the song continues some of the new-wave influences present across Rodrigo’s latest material, including a prominent bass-driven sound that gives the track an urgent, energetic quality. 

From 500 CDs to a Global Release

Rodrigo initially gave fans an unusual opportunity to hear the song.

On August 21, just 500 physical CD copies of “serena joy” were made available exclusively at Analog Music Shop in Tustin, California. The limited release sold out, turning the song into an instant collector’s item before it was even available to the wider public. 

The unusual strategy also connected the release directly to the Southern California community where Rodrigo’s upcoming festival will take place.

Now, fans around the world can finally listen to the track on streaming platforms. 

Why Was “Serena Joy” Left Off the Album?

The song was originally recorded during the sessions for Rodrigo’s third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.

Although “serena joy” was considered for the album, it ultimately didn’t make the final tracklist. Rodrigo has previously explained that the song didn’t fit the album’s chronological relationship narrative, which follows the development and breakdown of a romance. 

Its eventual release therefore gives listeners a chance to hear a different side of the creative process behind the album.

A Perfect Release Ahead of Daisy Chain Fields

The timing of “serena joy” is particularly significant.

Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival will take place on August 29 at Great Park in Irvine, bringing together an all-women or women-fronted line-up featuring artists including Chappell Roan, Doechii, Mitski, Bikini Kill, Garbage and The Breeders, alongside special guests including Stevie Nicks and Sarah McLachlan. 

The festival is designed to combine music with support for organisations working on women’s rights, reproductive health and related causes. Net proceeds will benefit organisations including Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights. 

Rodrigo is also expected to perform “serena joy” live for the first time at the festival.
