S H I R A N – Middle Eastern Solutions Through Music

If you think punk bands of the 70s pushed things to the limit or that Kanye baits controversy, then take a moment to consider S H I R A N. An Israeli Jew born to half-Yemini/half-Iraqi parents, Shiran Avraham (always spelled capitalised and with spaces when wearing her performance hat), S H I R A N has set out to not only champion the Israeli music scene but also to embrace her Arabic roots by singing her tracks in the Yeminite tongue of her father’s ancestors. Such is the magnetism of S H I R A N as an artist and the unpolitically motivated themes of her songs, she has managed to entrance both side of the divide, with both Jews and Arabs going crazy for her latest self-titled release.

Although in a language that admittedly relatively few will be familiar with, her combination of afrobeats, sultry soul and arabic scales are hugely addiction, not to mention the video to her track Zehere, which has been described “as if Wes Anderson directed a Middle Eastern music video”. Dig in!
