Under the Covers
You’re on your fourth album with a major label – they insist you do a covers album, whereby you interpret your favourite works in your own style. Please select the ten tracks you’d ideally like to cover, along with a brief explanation as to why that artist or track means something to you.
‘Teardrop’ – Massive Attack: I love the ambience of this track, I’d put more of a hip-hop beat behind it and distort the guitar for the later parts.
‘In the Air Tonight’ – Phil Collins: Hypnotizing from the beginning to the end (I like a challenge!), I dig it because it was the first track I heard that really made me want to learn the drums!
‘Little Wing’ by Jimi Hendrix – this is still the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever heard. Guest solo from John Mayer without doubt!
‘Nothing Else Matters’ by Metallica – the lyrics of this song really resonate with me. I’d take the metal aspect out of it and put a really chilling snare in it, as well as the delay the hell out of the guitar!
‘Pastime Paradise’ by Stevie Wonder – I’d really like to do something different with this as everyone probably knows it as Coolio’s version, but its a genius bit of song-writing.
‘Everything’ by Ben Howard – I love this song for alone time, its an example of what you can create without overcomplicating things.
‘Tilted’ by Christine & The Queens – I thought this song was so original and fresh when it came out, plus I have a lot of respect for her as an overall performer.
‘Scar Tissue’ by Red Hot Chili Peppers – I love this track as it demonstrates a totally different capability of Anthony Keidis. Frusciante’s guitar work is beautiful as always.
‘Let The Drummer Kick’ by Citizen Cope – all about the beat! Plus its from one of my favourite movies ever, Coach Carter.
‘Self Control’ by Frank Ocean – its just simple, but very effective. Probably my favourite track off of his latest album.
