Golden Axe Becomes an Animated Series on Paramount+

A classic SEGA video game is getting a brand-new life on television. Golden Axe, the legendary 1989 arcade beat-’em-up, is being transformed into an animated comedy series that will premiere exclusively on Paramount+ on September 16, 2026

The first look at the series has now been revealed, giving fans their first glimpse at the new animated take on the fantasy franchise — and it is clear that this version is taking a much more comedic and self-aware approach to the original game.

From Arcade Classic to Animated Comedy

Originally released in arcades in 1989, Golden Axe became one of SEGA’s most recognisable fantasy action games. Players could choose between three warriors — Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead — and fight their way through the fantasy world of Yuria while battling increasingly difficult enemies.

The animated series brings the three heroes back together for another mission against their longtime enemy, Death Adder. There is just one problem: Death Adder keeps coming back.

The new series turns this familiar fantasy adventure into a meta-comedy, combining the original characters and mythology with modern humour.

A Star-Studded Voice Cast

The series features an impressive cast of actors behind its animated characters.

Matthew Rhys voices Gilius Thunderhead, the grumpy dwarf warrior, while Liam McIntyre plays Ax Battler, the honourable barbarian. Lisa Gilroy voices Tyris Flare, the powerful battle sorceress.

Danny Pudi also joins the cast as Hampton Squib, a new character created specifically for the animated series. Hampton dreams of becoming a legendary adventurer but is far less prepared for the dangers of the quest than he believes.

The cast also includes Carl Tart, who voices Chronos “Evil” Lait, the humanoid panther originally introduced in Golden Axe III

Familiar Characters Return

While the series introduces new elements, fans of the original games should recognise plenty of familiar imagery.

The first look features Death Adder, sword-wielding skeletons, Chicken Legs and Death Armor, bringing some of the franchise’s most recognisable creatures and enemies into the animated world.

The central trio also remains intact, allowing longtime players to reconnect with the characters who made the original arcade game so memorable.

Behind the Series

Golden Axe has been developed by Mike McMahan, best known for Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Joe Chandler, who has worked on American Dad!.

The project was originally ordered as a 10-episode animated series for Comedy Central in 2024. It is produced by CBS Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film.

After years of attempts to bring the franchise to television, the adaptation is finally making its way to audiences.

A New Generation Discovers Golden Axe

The move from a 1980s arcade game to a modern streaming series highlights the continued popularity of video game adaptations.

Recent years have seen major gaming franchises move successfully into television and animation, introducing classic characters to audiences who may never have played the original games.

For Golden Axe, the challenge will be balancing nostalgia with a completely new comedic identity.

Rather than simply recreating the original adventure, the new series appears ready to have fun with the fantasy world and its characters while maintaining connections to the SEGA classic.

When Does Golden Axe Premiere?

The animated series will premiere exclusively on Paramount+ on September 16, 2026, with all 10 episodes planned for the streaming release.

For longtime SEGA fans, the series offers a nostalgic return to Yuria and its legendary warriors. For newcomers, it could introduce one of gaming’s classic fantasy franchises in a completely different format.

With a new generation of viewers ready to meet Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead, Golden Axe is officially making the jump from arcade screens to streaming.
