DREWKABOOM! It looks like it’s a speech bubble from a DC comic but actually it’s the name of one of the most intriguing rappers to appear in 2019 and he’s laying the foundations to make 2020 the year of the mask.
Based in New York, DREWKABOOM is not easily defined musically – the fact the first words of his forthcoming single, Lost Moon of Jupiter, are “this is not Hip-Hop” is a sign post to somewhere strange with a gravity all of its own. There are elements of Mos Def; the driftier parts of Wu Tang; the syrupy gloop of Tricky but the overriding tone is hypnotic and, perhaps unsurprisingly given the title, otherworldly.
The fact DREWKABOOM sounds like he is on another plain is for a good reason. As a yogi and qualified sound healer, his entire way of life is based upon mindfulness and energies, with his music being an extension of that. Lost Moon of Jupiter is an allegory for “throat Chakra” – you’d be right in thinking I had to look that up:
“The gift of this chakra is accepting your originality, expressing your authentic voice and speaking your truth.
The energy of this chakra allows you to seek knowledge that is true, beyond limitations of time and space, beyond cultural and family conditioning.
The main challenge for the fifth chakra is doubt and negative thinking. When you gain and verify your knowledge through meditation and direct experience, then doubt and negativity are removed”.
Lost Moon of Jupiter is the first track from his debut EP, Woo, released early in 2020. You’ll be seeing and hearing plenty of DREWKABOOM over the coming months. You’ll spot him easily enough – he’s the one with three faces.
