Jonny Dee is the new saviour of rock n roll. And hip hop. And soul. We could go on. Like innovative acts before him (De La Soul immediately spring to mind), Jonny has taken his musical influences and soaked them into his very essence. The music he has put together isn’t the usual run through familiar tropes and pandering to audiences who have to be spoon-fed. His forthcoming album, The Human Experience (released May 12th) is as exciting as listening to what you might expect listening to Jimi Hendrix channeling Chance the Rapper with the Beatles playing in the background. In fact that’s exactly what it’s like.
Recognisable as rap but filled with elements of funk, jazz, psychedelia, soul and video game music and with no two tracks delivering anything less than an overwhelming urge to throw half your record collection in the bin as the worthless dreck it is, this is without question one of the most exciting releases of 2018. We’ll tease some more over the coming days and weeks but you’re in for a treat. Hello music and welcome back – we missed you.
