Diagnosis were lucky enough to catch up with emerging Egyptian pop artist, Music Theory. Here’s what he had to say:
Tell us a little bit about where you’re from?
I come from Cairo, Egypt. Living in Egypt is totally different than living in the west. I lived a couple of years in the States and the difference in culture has really affected my perception and widened my view on life.
Growing up in the suburbs of Giza, life was very mellow and family oriented.
How has your location affected your music?
I grew up in Cairo, Egypt, but also spent some time in the USA. I listened mostly to English music but the influence of Arabic music is undoubtedly present.
What genre would you describe your music as?
I write mainstream music. My lyrics are simple with catchy melodies. I like to write in different genres but I never steer far from mainstream (e.g. Pop/Rock – Pop/Dance – Pop/RnB)
What are you listening to? What are your influences?
Right now I’m listening to Kygo, Radiohead, Eminem, David Guetta, Sia.
I grew up in the eighties and the nineties. I listened to mainstream music. Michael Jackson, REO speedwagon, Sublime, REM, Oasis, NKTOB, Boys 2 Men, Phil Collins, Bon Jovi, Stock Aitken Waterman, Pet Shop Boys, etc.
I could write an endless list. It was always about the song, not the artist. I always listen to mix tapes, never albums.
I believe that everything I hear influences me.
Where can we see you play?
I don’t play live yet – but perhaps sometime in the near future!
Are there any evocative personal experiences that come through in your music?
I write music that relates to me. This helps me cope with disappointments or inspires me to be better.
I was a very shy person growing up. Writing music put me up when I was feeling down. It helped me release my thoughts and dreams that I usually couldn’t share. I could be whoever I wanted in this make believe world that I create while writing. As I grew up, I wrote also about experiences and emotions. I tackle love, hope, despair, loneliness, inner conflicts, etc.
What’s next?
The plan is to keep releasing songs until I can complete an album. Once I have this complete, the next step is to start gigging and playing locally – watch this space!
